As published in Health Education & Behavior (2020). This is the first poem ever published by HEB, and the first work of public health scholarship to use poetry as a format for critical commentary and analysis of structural racism and COVID-19.

  • 2021 Lawrence W. Green Paper of the Year Award

...We know who you are, that you’ll return
as surely as paragraphs,
bringing forth funds to examine
the labyrinths of your power;
you’ll want us to run models to feed our kids,
specify parameters to meet mortgages,
partition variance, publish papers, polish portfolios like nails
so we can break them on the dark side of a door
closed on our existence:

reanimated

by imputation.

We, the undead, will be here in the mourning —
eyes turned upon you,
vile clay beneath our feet.

And that data better be clean.
